Leadership lives in the minds of those you lead

Meaning is made by the person receiving a message. Your intent as a leader doesn't decide it.
Führung entsteht im Kopf der Geführten

Cristian Hofmann, Executive Coach, collected eight observations from his coaching practice with executive teams and individual clients. He turned them into a card series. Download it free at the end of this post.

Eight observations from the coaching room

1. Focus decides what happens.

Every organization exists for a purpose. The question that actually changes leadership: where should our energy go?

2. Who decides if you’re leading?

The receiver decides what a message means. If nobody notices you’re leading, you’re leading alone.

3. No-win situations come with the job.

You can’t serve every interest equally well. Read resistance as an opportunity, not a disruption, and you’ll lead with more ease.

4. Leadership isn’t a one-way street.

The people you lead, lead back. Their reactions shape how the leader behaves too.

5. Five basic needs decide engagement.

Self-esteem, control, orientation, attachment, pleasure.

6. State your view, not a fact.

Speak in the first person: state your position, not a fact. Authority comes from presence, not from title.

7. What good leadership actively gives.

Show appreciation, don’t just feel it. Focus on what’s already working. Set goals people believe they can hit. Invite the critics in.

8. The question that matters.

Which goals should shape how you organize your team to work at its best?

Who is this for?

For leaders, executive teams, and team leads who want to check, in a few minutes, whether their leadership actually lands the way they mean it.
